The Mindanao Conversations on the Economy and Environment: Towards an Economic Research Agenda for Mindanao at this Historical Juncture

July 15, 2015 | Uncategorized | By Joint Ateneo Institure for Mindanao Economics | 0 Comments

The Mindanao Conversations is a series of workshops aimed to shed light on the political economic and environmental issues plaguing Mindanao and to contribute to mapping solutions towards an alternative future of sustainable and inclusive growth amidst the ethnic, cultural and ideological diversity of the region.

This first workshop hopes to convene key representatives of the economics faculty and research-action centers of the Ateneo de Davao University, Ateneo de Zamboanga and Xavier University as well as relevant Mindanao-based agencies; and to provide a venue for collectively formulating the research agenda of the newly conceptualized Joint Ateneo Institute for Mindanao Economics (JAIME), its organization and network. To facilitate the process of agenda setting, at most 35 participants (excluding resource persons) are expected to attend this Workshop.

The agenda setting workshops are embedded in two days of discussion of current perspectives on various aspects of the Mindanao economy, their challenges and prospects. A half-day workshop on the research agenda and the organization of the JAIME involving the Ateneo-based participants is scheduled on Day 3.

Once the agenda is drafted and the organization of the JAIME and its network laid-out, the second workshop in the Mindanao Conversations Series will substantiate this agenda by taking stock of past and ongoing research and interventions in the region—as well as related national research and initiatives—from which the research projects to be undertaken are expected to take off. Subsequent workshops will focus on research results and action plans.
